I’m not fat, I’m big boned!
Is your pet fighting the fat? Could they enrol in the next biggest loser? Increasing numbers of pets are suffering from obesity. A treat here and there may seem a harmless way to show our pets we love them but at what cost to their health long term.
Unfortunately many pet treats are full of fat and hidden calories. This coupled with lack of exercise soon spirals into an obesity problem that’s hard to beat.
Obesity in pets is associated with many challenging problems. Joints are placed under heavy strain and animals can suffer severe respiratory compromise. Diabetes is a common problem with being overweight and ultimately a decreased life span can be expected. What can we do to combat the problem? - Feeding cats on a raised surface means they at least have to exercise to get their diner. - Reducing meal amounts if exercise decreases. - Feeding low fat treats – they won’t know the difference-honest! - Our tastes are different to our pets…..just because we think its yummy doesn’t mean they will. Don’t feed human junk food….it can actually be harmful. - We are in control of their exercise and feed intake so take responsibility for it. - Play with cats, getting them to chase toys or healthy treats. - Weigh our pets regularly to gain an objective view on their weight. - Obesity diets - a great way to feed our pets a low fat meal that they still enjoy. For advice and assessment of your pets weight please call into the Old Mill Vet Surgery and feel free to use our scales in the waiting room. We also have samples of obesity dry food and are always happy to help. |
