...“COMMITMENT”
Here we are already in to the second quarter of the New Year and how many of us can say we are sticking to our New Year resolutions especially if it concerns our lifestyle habits and fitness. We all make them by the last chimes of the clock, only to fail within the first couple of weeks even if we get that far!!
When it comes to Health and Fitness we either make excuses or want instant results and when it gets too hard we fool ourselves and put it off until “We’re in a better mood “ or  “My life is too busy or stressful at the moment “. As with most health and fitness issues we never take them seriously until something goes wrong with our bodies or we are told we are harming ourselves through bad habits in our lifestyle.
Our first step to rectifying this problem is Forward Planning, as with most things in our lives we need to have a plan. Being fit and healthy is a big “Commitment” and like most commitments e.g. getting a job or buying a house, you need to make a contract with yourself so that you keep your goal in sight and you stick to the task. You need to ask some questions about yourself and be honest with your answers...
Do I want to do this, why and whom am I doing this for?
Is what I’m asking myself to do achievable?
Can I get help and advice when I need it?
Will it make me a happier, healthier, more confident person?
What realistic time and commitment can I allocate to this plan (as in hours/week) going forward? This question is important because time set aside will help your plan to succeed. As with most things when it comes to ourselves everyone else comes first, never leaving time for just us making us feel guilty about any personal time we invest, even when it’s a health related issue.
Being committed to your plan is giving yourself time, which you deserve, to achieve your goal; a healthier fitter you. Commitment also means not giving up when things don’t go to plan, as with all things we want the path may be rocky and we may stray, but we shouldn’t beat ourselves up if we do, accept that the odd slip-up will be made, after all nobody is perfect.
Seeking out help can also enable us to reach our goal, there are people who are qualified to help with exercise prescription, nutrition advice and can help you find answers to your Health and Fitness questions, to give support and encouragement when needed.
Remember Health and Fitness is not just for the moment, it’s for life. It will mean change and “Commitment” but the long term benefits gained are well worth it.
