A spring afternoon, and our annual Savoyard Singers concert - what more could one want? A generous home- made country afternoon tea? Alright then – that too! This year, the programme, “You Must Remember This”, will bring back some great memories from the era of great musical shows. There are more than twenty nostalgic selections from famous stage and screen productions of the ilk of “Kiss me Kate”, “South Pacific”, “Hello Dolly”, “Porgy and Bess”, “Gigi” and “Wizard of Oz.” to name a just few. The Singers are drawn from the ranks of Brisbane’s Savoyard Musical Comedy Society, conceived in 1961 as a small group to do G&S. Since then it has thrived mightily, and now puts on several major and highly professional productions in the Iona theatre and the Caloundra Civic Centre each year. Most recently we have seen “42nd Street” and “The Boy From Oz”. “Carousel” is coming up soon and there is a hint that we may see “My Fair Lady” next year. Those in a position to see those performances are fortunate, but such productions are far beyond the capabilities of our little hall. Not so the concerts performed especially for Mt Mee audiences by a selection of their artists. This will be their 11th consecutive annual appearance on the Mountain, and this speaks for itself. To hear professional light opera singers of this quality in our little wooden hall - with its warm, full sound characteristics, is a rare experience. This year, artistic director Phyll Griffin has four new singers in her troupe: sopranos Kathleen Lamont and Melissa Quinn, tenor Paul Fegan and bass Rolf Grubwinkler. Phyll herself will squeeze some singing amongst her management duties, and that wonderful pianist Jan Ashworth will once again provide the accompiament. The usual arrangements apply, with the performance beginning promptly at 2pm and concluding at approximately 4.30pm. The interval of 20 minutes or so features the legendary complimentary afternoon tea on the lawn (weather permitting). There is ample parking in the hall grounds and across the road in the Arthur Duncan carpark. For visitors making a day of it, there is a great picnic spot with wood-fired barbecues at the Gantry in the Mt Mee Forest Park, or lunch next door to the Hall at Birches Restaurant (5498 2244). This is another non- profit community event organised by the Mt Mee Public Hall Inc. |
