Fly Brisbane to Cairns, then we have time to settle in our accommodation and free time to explore the town - staying overnight at The Hotel Cairns.
Our tour guide for our Top End adventure is from Heritage 4WD Tours, and we make an early start with them on Day 2.
Our Top End Tour takes in Kuranda, crosses the ‘River of Gold’ - the Palmer River - visiting Split Rock Aboriginal rock art, travelling through Laura to Musgrave Old Telegraph Station, our permanent camp site for this leg of the journey.
We travel the historic route from the frontier gold town of Coen, past the picturesque Archer River Crossing, on to the banks of the Wenlock River with its exotic birds and wildlife.
Travelling through the wilderness from Wenlock River to Twin Falls, brings us to a place with enchanting waterfalls and rock pools - known as “Paradise in Cape York”.
We cross the Jardine River, through Bamaga to Seisia, on Cape York - the permanent camp for our stay in this area.
We visit Somerset (road conditions permitting), Anchorage Beach (overlooking Albany Passage);  Thursday Island - including visiting the Torres Strait Museum, the Japanese Pearl Divers Memorial and Green Hill Fort, before catching the afternoon ferry to Horn Island for an overnight stay.  Next day we tour Horn Island including a visit to the Torres Strait Heritage Museum.  There is free time for exploring after lunch, then we ferry back to our camp at Seisia.
Leaving Seisia and the Top End, we begin our return journey.  Crossing the Jardine River we stop briefly at Fruit Bat Falls, then make our way to Bramwell.  Then it is on to Weipa, crossing the Wenlock River, to the shores of the Gulf of Carpentaria, at Weipa.
Leaving Weipa we visit Iron Range National Park which is the largest remaining area of lowland rainforest left in Australia.  There we may see the Eclectus Parrot and the rare Palm Cockatoo, and camp in the National Park (weather and road conditions permitting).
We explore Chilli Beach and the Portlands Roads - areas which once serviced the gold fields and WWII airfields.
We explore the Old Wenlock Gold Fields where we will see relics of Cape York’s history, and stay overnight at Archer River.  Then it is onwards and eastwards towards Princess Charlotte Bay and Lakefield National Park.
There is a visit to Old Laura Homestead;  on to Cooktown;  to Cape Tribulation - where the rainforest meets the sea - and then on to Cairns.  Our final day includes riding the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway with its wonderful views (there is an option to leave the cablecar for a rainforest walk, which includes a visit to Barron Falls Interpretation Centre).  We visit Kuranda with its shops, markets and historic buildings returning to Cairns via the Kuranda Scenic Railway, for our late afternoon flight back to Brisbane.
CAMPING EQUIPMENT:  Dome tents are provided and are head-room high and fully screened.  Foam mattress,  camp stretcher, sleeping bag and pillow all supplied.

Setting out from Mt Mee aboard our coach, we stop in Yarraman (a small town with many historical buildings) and visit the Cultural Museum that tells the story of the timber industry;  onwards through Chilchilla to Miles.  Here we stroll down Miles’ main street, which features buildings from the early pioneering days.  An optional extra is a visit to the Museum, featuring memorabilia from both World Wars, semi-precious stones and a shell collection.
From Miles we head to Roma, then continue on to Mitchell, visiting The Great Artesian Spa where you can treat yourselves to the warm waters of the spa, before heading to Charleville.  Here we visit the Cosmos Centre and Observatory - and see ‘up close’ some of the wonders of the universe through their powerful telescopes.
We visit Tambo, oldest town in western central Queensland, stopping at Tambo Teddies before continuing on to Blackall.  A tour of Blackall Woolscour, an historic steam-powered wool washing plant, is on our agenda, and, after lunch, we pass the legendary ‘Black Stump’ . . . . going beyond the Black Stump, to Barcaldine.
Our guide takes us on a tour of Barcaldine which includes the Tree of Knowledge and Australian Workers Heritage Centre before heading to Ilfracombe.  In 1886 43,000 sheep were moved through this area by a 27-horsemen droving team - the largest mob of sheep ever moved as a single flock!
Wellshot Centre at Ilfracombe tells of story of one of Australia’s great sheep stations, Wellshot Station.   We arrive at Longreach to attend Banjo’s Outback Theatre.  Relax and enjoy an evening of Australia’s bush poems, songs, yarns and skits with Alan ‘Banjo’ Blunt and ‘Rambling Ron’ with his guitar and harmonica.
Next day we visit The Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame; enjoy the R.M.Williams Stockmans Show, then have plenty of free time to explore the town before taking a relaxing evening cruise on the Thomson River aboard the west’s only paddle wheeler, the ‘Thomson Belle’.  Informative commentary, stunning sunset and dining ’under the stars’!
Heading further west, noting the dramatically changing scenery around Winton, we visit the Waltzing Matilda Centre - the only museum in the world to be dedicated to a song!  Also part of this Qantilda Pioneer Place Museum, we will view exhibitions in the Outback Regional Gallery, before walking around the town, then heading back to Longreach.
Next we take a Cobb & Co Stagecoach ‘Gallop Thru the Scrub Tour’ where we ride in a replica coach.  Lunchtime sees us at the Qantas Founders Museum, then there is plenty of free time to enjoy optional tours - at your own expense.
Leaving Longreach we head east to Anakie (gemstone country) where we also check out Rubyvale and Sapphire before moving on to Emerald.  Onwards to Blackwater, visiting the Blackwater International Coal Centre; before heading through cattle country and Biloela were we visit Queensland Heritage Park before continuing on to Monto.
Monto sees us don our walking shoes to explore in the 3000 hectare National Park and Cania Gorge.  We leave Monto, heading south, stopping in Gayndah at the Historical Museum, before continuing south.  A farewell lunch at Nanango RSL Club, a walk around town, then head for home!
