Thomas Reeves from the Dayboro Uniting Church is making his third voyage to the Solomon Islands to assist with community building projects.
This time he is taking his wife Narelle, a registered nurse. Narelle recently also provided her skills to the Marine Reach medical program working in the Pacific Islands.
The Uniting Church congregation as well as supporters from the other churches have given Thomas and Narelle considerable assistance with their volunteer work in the Pacific.
Thomas has been able to prefabricate steel superstructure for buildings in his workshop at Samsonvale, and had them shipped in containers to the islands. The delicate and difficult task of shifting these items from a large ship off shore to small craft and then on the backs of locals to the site is an amazing story in itself. When Thomas and others fly into the location they are able to assemble the buildings often working in tremendously humid conditions with ongoing heavy rain. On this trip they are doing a reconnaissance of the area and investigating what still needs to be done to assist the locals. All of the work is recorded on film and Thomas is always willing to share this with interested people and supporters. Thomas and Narelle were commissioned for their latest journey at the Uniting Church on Sunday morning, 28th June. Support for Thomas’ and Narelle’s work will be gratefully received at any time. On a recent visit to Dayboro, local missionary Mik Henzell was hosted at a Family Tea arranged by the Dayboro Churches. This gathering provided Mik with sufficient resources to complete his own residence in the jungle of Bolivia and a freezer for the orphanage. The Casa Segura orphanage is now receiving children into its facility and school and many kids are being rescued from a life on the streets or death in the jungle. The Dayboro Churches are planning to shortly bring together all the teams involved in overseas projects for a great sharing of experiences and ideas. As well as Thomas, Narelle and Mik’s work is the wonderful self sustaining projects in Uganda initiated by the Catholic Church. This involves members of our local Catholic Community, including Michael Cruice. Paul Inglis 3425 3220 |
