What’s been happening?
Both winter and spring for the Dayboro Scouts has been witness to a flurry of activities among our youth members.
The younger Joey Scouts have tested their physical talents in both a mini Olympics and a big day of Skill-O-Rama fun at the Redcliffe Showgrounds, with youth members from many scout groups and districts.
Cub scouts are continuing to develop a range of skills including basic knot tying; so useful for supporting many individual and team activities in scouting. Great tent pitching skills were on display at the Pine Rivers Show, with Dayboro Scouts coming a narrow second to the Lawnton Scout Group. Alongside the enjoyable weekend camps, youth members from Scouts and Venturers are involved in planning a number of challenging hiking expeditions to meet different levels of achievement. Scouts from all over the world came together on the weekend of October 17-18th to celebrate ‘Jamboree on the Air’ (JOTA) and ‘Jamboree on the Internet’ (JOTI). While camping for the JOTA/JOTI weekend, Dayboro Scouts were able to use amateur radio and internet to unite with over 500,000 of their international peers. Achievements in Scouting While many youth members have been working on their scout craft skills and awards, special congratulations goes to Sam Stubbings who has completed all requirements for the Grey Wolf Award, and also scout patrol leader, Caitlin Rutherford, who was awarded her leadership badge. Volunteers in Scouting – LEADERS WANTED Thanks to leaders in the Scouting movement, our Dayboro youth members continue to enjoy many challenges. The opportunities our leaders give to youth members promote youth responsibility, team work and self-reliance. Any new leaders are given progressive training and support, provided by Scouts Australia, Queensland Branch, which is a registered training authority. All Certificate level and Diploma qualifications in leadership are recognised by the national Vocational Education and Training Sector (VET). We need assistant leaders to support the Scouts who are aged between 10 and 15 years and Venturer Scouts, aged between 14 and 17. Scouting is adventurous and fun, so if you think you are the type of person who would enjoy a challenge in helping to educate youth in Scouting, please enquire with Kath Thomson – Assistant Group Leader ph: 3289 9215. Father’s Day Raffle The winning ticket for all those Big Boys Toys was purchased by local resident Yvonne Handy who made her husband very happy. A big thank you goes to all businesses for their kind support in making this raffle a success. A special acknowledgement goes to Paul Scriven, Manager of Superior Fences and Gates for their generous gift of $500 toward product purchases. Lyle Thomson, President of Dayboro Scouts presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation.
