Third Officer Selwyn Barr of Dayboro, a veteran volunteer rural firefighter of over 35 years experience, received his medallion for his dedication and commitment to the fire safety of our community. He has fought most of the biggest grass/bushfires we have seen in these parts and, in most cases, has supplied his own machinery (at no cost to the Rural Fire Service or the community) to cut fire breaks through heavily-wooded areas - not only in our district, but surrounding fire districts as well. Although Selwyn was unable to attend the ceremony, he was very pleasantly surprised to hear that his many deeds had been acknowledged by his peers. Selwyn has a thorough knowledge of the terrain around the Dayboro district and his firefighting skills are second to none.
Deputy Chairman Kevin O'Sullivan is also a volunteer rural firefighter. Originally from “over the ditch”, he attended his first Rural Fire Brigade meeting in early 2005 and signed up in April that year, not long after settling into his property at Rush Creek. Kevin has a similar dedication and commitment to the fire safety of our community as Selwyn – only not the length of service.  His managerial knowledge has been of great assistance to our brigade – and his skills as a rural firefighter are being honed by some of the best senior rural firefighters in the district. Selwyn and Kevin are both well respected members of our brigade and are also a great asset to the Rural Fire Service.
DDRFB would also like to acknowledge Auxiliary Lieutenant Scott Dun of Dayboro Fire Station for his DES Australia Day Achievement Award Medallion as well. Congratulations to all three gentlemen. Well done, guys.
The following is part of a press release from Neil Roberts MP, Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Emergency Services.
“Department of Community Safety (DCS) staff and volunteers from across Queensland were honoured for their outstanding contributions to the community as part of Australia Day Achievement Awards ceremonies held throughout the state last month.
These awards were our chance to say thank you to the frontline, support and administrative personnel whose efforts uphold community safety in Queensland.
One of the many great things about the Department is its dedicated and committed team of staff and volunteers, who devote enormous effort to a range of services including frontline emergency assistance to Queenslanders and working behind the  scenes to enhance service delivery.
I congratulate the 258 DCS personnel and volunteers who received Achievement Medallions in recognition of their work, along with the entire DCS team, for your efforts in making Queensland a safer place.”
