OUR SAVIOURS LUTHERAN CHURCH:
Our Saviours Lutheran Church closed its doors in a special ceremony held on Sunday 13th November 2011. Our Saviours Lutheran Church was dedicated on 27th February 1949. It was built in Cruice Street on land donated by Carl Enchelmaier. The builders were Bernie Kay and Norman Clegg. The first Lutheran services were reported to have occurred in the Laceys Creek School in 1896.
They were later held in the Laceys Creek Hall. These services ceased for a time but in 1926 the Lutheran Church contacted Lutheran settlers in the area and a meeting was held in the Laceys Creek Hall on 28th July 1926 at which it was decided services would be held every four weeks, in German in the morning and English in the afternoon or evening. Sunday School was to take place at 2.30pm. The congregation continued to function during the Second World War through the efforts of the Home Mission. Discussions on building a church in Dayboro began as services were still being held at Laceys Creek and after some time the new church was dedicated in 1949. In 1959 a Women’s Guild was formed which continued to function until 1969. At the 25 year anniversary celebrations the question of closing down the congregation was seriously entertained but the decision was made to continue. In 1984 some of the female members of the congregation reignited the Sunday School which was actually held after school on a Wednesday afternoon and this continued for 10 years. A 50th anniversary celebration was held in the church in 1999 and since then the church continued to operate until it closed its doors on Sunday 13th November 2011.
PHOTOGRAPH OF THE MONTH:
Building No. 11 on the Dayboro “The Town of Yesteryear” Historical Town Walk brochure is the building known to many locals as “the old chemist shop” at 12 Williams Street. The original building on this site was a hardware store built by Walton Albert (Jack) Thorpe in 1925 however this building was destroyed by fire. In 1929 Robert Ernest (Bob) Stephens, sawmiller, purchased the property and built the present building which was initially used as a bakery outlet. The bread was baked at the bakery on Kelly’s property in McKenzie Street and sold from the shop in Williams Street. The business was operated by James Henry Lunn and his brother (name unknown). James Henry Lunn and his wife Eileen Florence Lunn remained on the local electoral roll until 1936 when they moved to Stanthorpe. We do not know when the building became a chemist shop, nor do we know the name of the chemist or chemists who were in business there. Can any readers shed any light on this? Bob Stephens retained ownership of the building and the word “chemist” is noted on property records in 1940 and 1948. The building was also used as a private residence with Bill Moore, an engine driver from the Dayboro Butter Factory, and his wife Bridget living there. Bill Moore died in 1957, aged 67, and his wife remained living in Dayboro for some time. Bridget Moore died in 1965, aged 72.

The building has also been home to a bootmaker and over more recent times, restaurants and coffee and gift shops. Unfortunately the building has also been vacant for periods of time over the years but it now has a new lease of life with Dayboro Deli opening its doors on 29th November. The Dayboro Deli will be open for breakfast and lunch 6 days a week, Tuesday through Sunday, from 8.00am until 3.00pm. They will also be stocking local and international cheeses, condiments and jams from around the world and other deli items. We welcome Dan and Sarah Smith to our town and wish them every success in their new venture.
DAYBORO HOSPITAL: The house at 14 Delaney Road went to auction on 3rd December 2011. This building was the Dayboro Hospital that was established in 1932. The building was built by John Thomas Hall about 1929. Herbert Ashton-Shorter was the first doctor from 1932 to 1934, then Dr. Arthur Malaher in 1934/35, followed by Dr. James Joseph Ryan from April 1935 until the closure of the hospital towards the end of 1939. The first baby born in the hospital was John Purtell born on 10 September 1932, son of the local police constable. It is believed that the last baby born there was Kevin Sellin from Ocean View (27/8/1939). His birth occurred barely two weeks after the death of his grandfather Carl Sellin in the hospital. We are endeavouring to compile a list of births and deaths in this hospital and also information on anyone else who may have been a patient there.
