DAYBORO SHOW – 9TH/10TH/11TH JULY

It’s Show Time:  Our Society will be having its display is the usual position in the Pavilion.  Please take time to come and have a look.
75s & OVER DAY:    This will be held at the Showgrounds on Sunday 26th September from 11.00 a.m.  Morning tea and a light lunch will be provided.  Anyone who is 75 years of age or over who grew up in the district is welcome to attend.  For catering purposes, please let me know if you are attending.  This year’s theme will be Clubs & Associations (Sporting clubs, lodges etc) and Entertainment (Did they dance till dawn like their forefathers did?)
MT. PLEASANT HALL CENTENARY:  A great day was organised by the Mt. Pleasant Hall Committee, and in particular Stan Chambers (a committee member for 41 years), to celebrate the Hall’s centenary.  Our Society provided a display in the Hall which was very popular throughout the day.  Three wonderful paintings were done by local artist Carol Donaldson reproducing photographs of the Cage Dip, Rose’s Sawmill and the Mt. Pleasant Banana Settlement.  The Mt. Pleasant Quilters made a commemorative quilt which also included reproductions of photographs of the hall and others of local interest.  These items are to remain on display at the Hall so if you are able to attend a function there at any stage take the opportunity to check them out.  The committee also created a pitsaw mill especially for the day.
HISTORY QUEENSLAND FAIR:  This was held on Sunday 23rd May and our Society had a stand so it made for a very busy weekend.  The fair is held every two years and this year the venue was the Donald Simpson Centre at Cleveland.  Alison Taylor and I attended and we had a very enjoyable day – even watched a koala cross the street at a traffic island as we were leaving.  We stopped off at North West Hospital on the way home to visit Alison’s new grandson Brodie Thomas Ross Wolfenden, born to Alison’s daughter Joanne and her husband Stephen on 21st May.  Congratulations to the happy family.
DAYBORO DAY:  Another wonderful day – congratulations to the organisers and all their helpers.  Our numbers in the Parade certainly increased this year.  We had descendants of the McKenzie, Rohlf, Bond, Strain, Hamilton, Williams (both C.T. & Frank), Lacey, Pritchard, Heathwood and Enchelmaier families participate – and don’t the youngsters love it!  We were also able to exhibit all 30 panels from The Dayboro Story: The First 100 Years Museum display, as well as 2010 Anniversaries (of which there are quite a few).  An A3 folder depicting all the panels was donated to us by the Pine Rivers Heritage Museum and this is on permanent display in “Dayboro Cottage”.  Folders containing photographs of early pioneers (mostly wedding photos or family group photos) and a short history of the family were also prepared for the day and are now on permanent display at “Dayboro Cottage”.  These have been prepared in such a way that they can be added to at any time and maybe down the track something more may come out of it.  The slide show prepared in conjunction with the Museum display was also very popular.  Again, this will be produced in marketable form but it still needs some fine tuning.
JULY PROGRESS ASSN. CALENDAR PHOTOGRAPH:  The last horsedrawn coach (Royal Mail) between North Pine (Petrie) and Terrors Creek (Dayboro) 1918.  The driver of the coach is Bill Battershill. The man standing at the rear is Ferdinand (Ferdie) Schmidt. The passenger and child are unknown.  The wagonette to the right was also used to convey the mail and passengers, the driver being Tom Hart.  The coach is standing in front of the premises of F. Schmidt & Sons, Coachbuilders.  [Go back to the January photograph - Skerman Bros. Blacksmiths c. 1901 – it is the same building with an extension at the right hand end.]  William Henry Charles Battershill had the mail contract for this route from 1914 to 1918 and passengers were allowed to be carried subject to vehicle licensing.  Battershill is listed in the 1915 Post Office Directory as a coach proprietor and mail contractor.  In 1910 he was residing in Terrors Creek but moved to Petrie in January 1914.  The coach was originally a wagonette used in general cartage in the district.  It was rebuilt as a coach for the mail run in 1914 by the Schmidts.  Battershill also operated another wagonette which was most of the time fitted with a canopy and used if there were only one or two passengers making the journey, carrying the passengers and mail as well as parcels and goods.  Passengers and mail were collected from Petrie Railway Station and delivered to Vellnagel’s Store in Dayboro.
