Kindy children put in an Olympic effortYou may not be aware that a major sporting event was recently held in our very own small community of Dayboro – the 2010 Kindy Olympathon.
Our mini-athletes were training for weeks to bring out their very best efforts in running races, walking the plank, hop scotch, triple jump, stilts, high jump, sack races, egg and spoon races, Tarzan swinging and goal shooting.
The Olympathon has become a popular annual fundraiser for the Kindy – this year’s event raised just under $1800. More importantly, the day provided an opportunity for families to come together and enjoy a positive experience with their children. Kindergarten Director, Robyn Hoban, said the Kindy was thrilled with the level of family participation, which made the event all the more enjoyable for the children. “It was really fantastic to see just how many parents, grandparents and other family members came along to be part of the two Olympathon days,” she said. “It means a lot to the children when so many people take an interest in things that are happening in their lives, and that really is what being a community kindergarten is all about.” The Kindy Olympathon kicked off with a special opening ceremony complete with a parade of teams, and singing the National Anthem. After that, it was a blur of blue, red, green and yellow (Olympic ring colours) as the children hopped, skipped, jumped and ran their way through the day. Some of the braver parents even competed in their own sack race to the amusement of their children and other parents. Kindy President, Robyn Dunsford, said the two days would not have been possible without the support of generous local businesses. “We really want to send out a big thank you to the Dayboro Bakery for donating bread for the sausage sizzle as well as cupcakes for the children; and Birch Carroll & Coyle for donating movie tickets as prizes,” Robyn said. “This year we were also grateful for Constable Troy’s expertise in using his speed gun for the children’s running races which was a new and entertaining addition to the event”. “And thank you also to all the parents and other family members who helped out with the activities; painted faces, fingernails and hair; and generally got involved on the days.” As always, fundraising money is reinvested back into the Kindy program. |
