Getting Ready for Prep 2011 at the Dayboro Kindy
Term 3 is a fantastic time at the Dayboro Kindy! It’s a time when children have gained a high level of confidence in caring for themselves and their belongings; formed some solid friendships; and feel secure enough in their environment to become increasingly creative in their play.
New friendships have not just been restricted to the children – their parents have also enjoyed getting to know each other, which is great in a small community like Dayboro.
We at the Dayboro Kindy see ourselves as having an important role in easing the transition (for children and their families) from Kindy to full-time school. To do this, we maintain close ties with the Dayboro State School as demonstrated by our recent participation at their “Under 8s Week”. Many of our parents attended the school’s Prep Information Session in August to better prepare for 2011. Our Director, Robyn Hoban, has also offered parent-teacher interviews to discuss, amongst other things, each child’s readiness for the Preparatory Year. A child’s readiness for full-time Prep is assessed across a range of skills. Areas that we like to nurture within the context of a play-based curriculum include: Social skills – the ability to participate in group activities; follow instructions; manage separation anxiety; share and take turns; express their emotions appropriately; empathize; and show interest in interacting with others in their peer group. Cognitive skills – the ability to undertake basic problem-solving; and use conversational skills that build upon a particular theme. Self-care skills – the ability to independently attend to hygiene cares (e.g. hand-washing, toileting); care for personal belongings; and dress and undress as needed. Physical skills – the ability to safely climb, run, jump, skip, use scissors, etc. If you are interested in discussing how we can give your child the best possible start to their schooling career, please contact us on (07) 3425 1589 for further information about enrolment. Alternatively, we encourage an “open door” policy whereby you can simply drop into the Centre anytime from Monday to Friday, 9am to 2.30pm (during school term). |
