75s & OVER DAY:
This will take place at the Dayboro Memorial Showgrounds on Sunday 26th September 2010.  We hold it every two years as a get-together for those people who are aged 75 years and over who grew up in the Dayboro District.
It gives them a chance to catch up with old friends and relations.  Morning Tea will be served at 11.00 a.m. and a light lunch will be served around 1.00 p.m.   Husbands and wives are welcome or if another person is needed to provide transport, they too are welcome.  We just need you to let us know how many will be attending for catering purposes.  Phone Dayboro Cottage (3425 2032) between 10.00 a.m. and 3.00 p.m. any day.  There is also an answering machine if you phone out of those hours.  This year’s theme is recreation and entertainment.  Bring along any photos, trophies or anything else that you may have that you think will be of interest.
What sporting groups were in Dayboro in your young days – tennis, football, basketball, boxing etc.?
Did you belong to one of the Lodges or other Associations that were in existence – Masons, Buffalos, CWA, QATB, War Memorial Assn, Show Society, Rodeo Committee etc.?
Were there any youth groups?
What about the movies in the Excelsior Hall and the Dayboro Public Hall?
Did you dance ‘till dawn like our forebears seem to have done?
CASTREE & WARLAND FAMILIES:
On checking the Terrors Creek School Roll of 1904 for something with absolutely no connection, it was noticed that a Claud(e) CASTREE was enrolled on 9th May 1904 with the WARLAND children (father’s occupation Hotel Keeper).  Alfred Augustus WARLAND had taken over the Crown Hotel.  His wife was Laura NOWLAND, whose sister Clara NOWLAND had married John Edward CASTREE.  Claude (born 12th July 1892 at Blackall) appears to have attended the school until September that year.  On 6th February, 1908 his sister Madelain Beatrice CASTREE (born 6th May1896) was enrolled and attended until September that year – father’s occupation Sawyer.  On 15th September, 1913 John Henry CASTREE (born 2nd November, 1890 at Blackall) has gone on the Electoral Roll at Terrors Creek.  He was a wheelwright living at Terrors Creek when he enlisted on 25th May 1915, embarked on 16th August 1915 and was killed in action on 1st September 1916 at Mouquet Farm, Somme, France.  He is remembered on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Somme, France.  Claude Edward CASTREE, a Police Constable, enlisted on 13 August 1915, embarked on 18th September 1915 and was killed in action at the Somme on 15th August 1918.  He is buried in the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery.  Their cousin Ethel Laurie WARLAND married Joseph Terrence CRUICE on 26th February 1908.  John Henry CASTREE’s name appears on the Dayboro Soldiers’ Memorial erected in 1920 but we had not previously made the connection with the Cruice family.  The names ‘A.A. WARLAND’ and ‘A. WARLAND’ also appear on the Dayboro monument.  Alfred Augustus WARLAND (Jnr) enlisted on 30 September 1915, embarked on 31st March 1916, was wounded in action on 7th September 1916, was gassed on 19 October 1917 but survived to return to Australia on 10 August 1919.  His brother Arthur Irvine WARLAND enlisted on 18th July 1918, embarked on 7th November 1918, the troopship was recalled and he was transferred to the “Riverina” and disembarked on 28th December 1918.  The two Warland brothers survived the War but sadly their cousins, the two Castree brothers, did not.
SEPTEMBER PROGRESS ASSN. CALENDAR PHOTOGRAPH:
Silverwood Butter Factory c. 1903:  The Silverwood Dairy Factory Company Limited’s new butter factory at Terrors Creek was opened by His Excellency the Governor Sir Herbert Chermside on Monday 14th September 1903.  The builder was John Storie and Waugh & Josephson installed the plant.  By the beginning of 1906 the Silverwood Butter Factory was averaging a daily output of slightly over a ton of butter.   There were 170 suppliers of cream.  The factory was taken over by the Terrors Creek-Samsonvale Co-operative Dairy Factory Co. in 1916.  The building was destroyed by fire on 15th May 1929.  The valuable plant and 100 boxes of butter went up in smoke.  The butter factory was rebuilt on a larger scale and remained in operation until 30th June 1965 when it was felt it had outlived its usefulness.  It had become a depot for milk for the Brisbane market and caused double handling.  Most of the 90 suppliers then had their milk taken direct to Brisbane while some were sending to Caboolture, closer to them.
CALENDAR COVER PHOTOGRAPH:
The last section of the railway to Dayboro was officially opened on 25th September 1920 by Mr. W. Bertram, Speaker of the Queensland Parliament.  The houses on the right hand side of McKenzie Street (going up hill from Williams Street) can be seen clearly in this photo.  On the left hand side can be seen the original Crown Hotel with stables at the rear (immeditely to the left of Mr. Bertram) and the new Dayboro State School (top right).  The official photographs were taken at the new School building.
