School children across the region will learn how to remain safe around dogs this year through Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Pet Awareness Program.
Offered free to all schools in the region, the interactive educational program is tailored to suit children ranging from three years old to year 12 students.
Council’s Prevent-A-Bite Dog Awareness team, which involves officers and specially trained dogs, works to teach students how to interact safely with dogs.
Mayor Allan Sutherland said council considered education in schools an important part of its animal management program.
“One of our long-term strategies is to encourage future generations to be responsible pet owners and stay safe around dogs,” he said.
Last year more than 15,000 children in schools across the region took part in council’s pet awareness program.
“The program’s messages are developed to suit the age level of students being addressed, which means the education process is one that continues as children grow,” Councillor Sutherland said.
Schools wishing to book the Prevent-A-Bite Dog Awareness team should contact council on 3205 0555.
