Keeping Country Kids Safe Initiative
The Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian has established the Keeping Country Kids Safe Initiative, which is aimed at preventing death and injury to children in country areas.
Keeping Country Kids Safe was developed as a result of the Commission’s research into child deaths in regional and remote areas of Queensland.
The Commission’s research has identified that children in these areas are more than twice as likely to die as a result of non-intentional injury such as transport incidents, drowning, house fires and other accidents.
Children in country areas seem to face risks unique to their environment, particularly on family farms where the home is combined with the workplace.
Therefore the Commission has produced a Discussion Paper regarding this issue that describes the trends and patterns uncovered by the Commission’s research, and asks a range of questions aimed at broadening the Commission’s knowledge of issues relevant and important to rural areas.
In addition to the Discussion Paper, a Keeping Country Kids Safe Community Survey has also been created to gain feedback from the community.
If you would like to read a copy of the Discussion Paper and make a comment or participate in the Community Survey please visit http://www.ccypcg.qld.gov.au/monitoring/kcks.html.

Have your say on Integrity and Accountability
The Government has released a discussion paper and has called on Queenslanders to have their say on the issues of accountability and transparency in the political process.
The release of Integrity and Accountability in Queensland follows a number of reforms announced recently by the Premier, including a ban on all Labor Members of Parliament attending political fundraisers where businesses pay for access and a ban on lobbyists serving on Government appointed boards, or in other significant appointments paid by the Queensland Government.
This discussion paper provides an opportunity for Queenslanders to help shape our state’s future.
It provides an overview of the broad range of checks and balances currently in place and asks Queenslanders for their views on what they think should be done to make our state’s potential landscape more transparent, open and accountable.
I want to hear what the people of Queensland have to say on these issues.
Key issues raised in the Paper include:
  - Legislating conflict of interest disclosures;
  - Banning how-to-vote cards;
  - Capping or banning political donations and increasing public funding of political parties as a result;
  - Capping election campaign expenditure including political advertising;
  - Expanding the CMC’s powers to investigate non-commercial Government-owned corporations;
  - Boosting legislative protection for whistleblowers.
The Premier has also announced a round table of experts to consider the feedback received and assist government in developing its response.
The roundtable will be chaired by the Premier.
Written submissions close on 16 September and can be provided via email, post or fax. Call my office for more information on 3205 6779 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
Until next time
