by Cr Bob MillarDAYBORO DAY – 20th Year!
This huge event draws visitors from far and wide, including interstate, and not only contributes to the growing interest in our area as a tourist destination, but is also a major component of the Pine Rivers Festival.
The event is free and includes entertainment, great food, Residents of the Year Awards, craft markets, waterless raft race and competitions, and also an Antique and Collectables Fair (entry fee applies). Come along and enjoy the great country town atmosphere anytime from 8am to 3.30pm. With volunteerism struggling to provide adequate resources for so many of our important community activities, can I ask all readers to dig deep into their time and energy to assist the small band of people who do most of the organizing of this event. For more information visit www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au .
If I can assist further please contact me.DRAINAGE WORKS The wet summer and flood rains of January have exposed a number of situations around Dayboro village leaving Council with some considerable drainage issues for which to find solutions. A $93,000 project undertaken to remove drainage issues around the soccer field and rodeo arena have recently be completed. A major project to improve the stormwater flows\ through Tullamore Park has also recently been completed with attention now focusing on dewatering the area around the tennis ground/ swimming pool precinct play equipment. With Dayboro Day looming, Council officers are working hard to enable this area to recover from the flooding, and be in good shape for Dayboro Day. U3A PINE RIVERS Are you retired and want to remain or become active, take up new interests or extend old ones? Why not investigate U3A – University of the Third Age – a learning community organised by and for people who can best be described as being in ‘active retirement’. Its overall aim is to provide members with both the stimulus of mental activity and the satisfaction of a continuing contribution to society. There are many classes, social activities and regular information meetings so why not contact U3A on 3321 0681 (message bank) or email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it MT SAMSON ROAD – PEDESTRIAN SAFETY FENCE Following representations from residents at a recent Rural Watch meeting, I have arranged for Council officer to install some fence panels between the path and Mt Samson Road near Merv Kenman Park to facilitate safer pedestrian access around the nearby culvert. This barrier will be installed as soon as can be arranged by Council crews. MOUNT SAMSON SCHOOL – CAR PARK In my December column I reported that Council provided additional car parking on land adjoining the Mt Samson State School to assist in relieving the pressure on parking. It was intended to bitumen seal and line mark the car park during the Christmas school holidays, but because construction was still taking place on the new school building and the construction traffic was still accessing the site across the car park we thought it best to wait until this building was finalised. I am happy to say that this new car park will now be sealed and line marking completed, weather permitting, over the Easter school holiday period. MOBILE LIBRARY How lucky are we – the Library comes to us! Why not visit the Mobile Library when it is in your area and check out what is available. The Mobile Library visits Dayboro and Ocean View on a fortnightly roster – the next 2 visits being Monday 8th May and Monday 22nd May. The large bus stops outside Hay Cottage, Dayboro from 1.30pm – 3.00pm and is back again between 5pm – 7.30pm. In between these times this bus visits Ocean View (Cnr Townsend and Zillman Road) between 3.30pm – 4.30pm. For more information and a complete roster visit our website www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au LAND VALUATIONS The next property valuation notices will be received in May 2011 and will be based on site value which means deductions for improvements such as retaining walls and filling will no longer be considered. Council had requested that the government hold off their valuation release due to the recent impact of floods (without success). With a shortened timeframe between receipt of these valuations and Council’s budget planning, the challenge lies ahead to bring all this together in time to bring down the budget by late June. The impact of flood damage to Council’s road network, along with the Premier’s recent announcements on structural changes to water distribution and retail pricing, will make the challenges for the next year’s budget even more difficult to overcome. NEW COLUMBARIAN WALL – SAMSONVALE CEMETERY As part of ongoing efforts to provide additional services and to improve the amenity of our many cemeteries, Council is undertaking a range of planning and construction works at Dayboro, Samford and Samsonvale cemeteries. Work has recently been completed on a new columbarium wall at the Samsonvale Cemetery on the edge of the now full Lake Samsonvale. In keeping with the general look and feel of the cemetery, the wall is made of stone and incorporates an arbour which will eventually be covered in star jasmine. There are perspex windows in the lower portion of the wall which will have photos of wildlife, the lake etc superimposed on them in the next month or so. DID YOU KNOW? That yellow lines along the side of the road next to the gutter means NO STANDING OR STOPPING for vehicles.
