The “Best of British”Christmas Concert with the Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra and Choral Society.
The Sunshine Coast Symhony Orchestra is performing in the Mt Mee Hall on Sunday afternoon, 30th November, in the last of the Hall Sunday concerts for 2008.
Conductor Adrian King.
Performing with them in a packed program entitled “Best of British” will be the Sunshine Coast Choral Society and soloist baritone Hans-Georg Wimmer.
This orchestra was formed in 1972, aiming to bring light classical music to the people of the Sunshine Coast and to be the best community orchestra around. Many would say that it is succeeding with both objectives - beyond its wildest dreams. It now consists of some 40 musician residents of the Sunshine Coast. Some are young, some older, some are professional and some amateur. In common, they have seriously good technical skills, a love of performing good music and not least, a great sense of fun. Their performances are never stuffy.
Conductor Adrian King has more than thirty years of experience in the music profession. A Pom, most recently from that famous fishing port Grimsby, he was trained in London at the Guildhall School of Music and the Trinity College of Music. For the last twenty years he has been busy arranging and conducting, and also adjudicating at festivals and music examinations. He migrated as a musical luminary to Noosa in 2006 with his wife Helen and two musician daughters and England’s loss is Queensland’s gain!
The SCSO presents just eight concerts each year, in venues from Caloundra to Noosa. This year we have snaffled one of them thanks to an inside run - orchestra manager Cathy Croot and tympanist Les Suart are Mountain residents and susceptible to blandishment. In truth, some years ago these two were instrumental in persuading the Mt Mee Hall committee to first try symphony concerts and the idea was incredibly successful. We will be delighted to have them performing here again, this time with the SCSO.
“The Sunshine Coast Choral Society” was founded in 1994 by the late Neil Atkinson and made such rapid progress that it was awarded “Champion Small Choir” at the 1996 and 1967 Queensland Eisteddfods. Like the orchestra, it now trains under the benevolent baton of Adrian.
German baritone Hans-Georg Wimmer has an amazing voice with a huge range, and is clearly heard throughout the auditorium even when singing in a whisper. He will contribute some Handel arias, and lighter pieces including some Gershwin.
The program will have a strong Christmas flavour, including (but not only) excerpts from Handel’s Messiah with the choir and orchestra. They will combine again later for a “terribly” British medley, with offerings such as “Rule Britannia” and “Pomp and Circumstance”. But, in between, there will be plenty of variety and plenty of fun. The audience is asked to bring its own funny hats and flags to join in the circus!
The concert begins in the Mt Mee Hall at 2pm sharp, and patrons should be seated well in advance of that time.
A generous country afternoon tea will be served on the lawn during interval, giving patrons a wonderful opportunity to mingle with the performers.
Entry is just $15.00, with pensioner concessions. Booking is absolutely essential.
